This is our first tasting to kick off the New Year. I used this rye to make Old Fashioned cocktails for my guests, and they were a big hit!
Straight rye whiskey was America’s First distilled spirit. With toffee and peppery notes, it’s less sweet than a bourbon, but with some similar tones like caramel and vanilla. “Rye” uses the same distilling methods as bourbon, but it differs in its mash bill. While straight bourbon must have at least 51% corn in it’s mash bill, rye whiskey contains at least 51% rye, resulting in a dryer, spicier product. Like bourbon, the remainder of the mash is made from a variety of grains. These days, only small quantities of straight rye are made, but there are signs of renewed customer interest. At 81 proof, this bottling from Wild Turkey has balanced aroma and palate, and would be perfect for mixing in cocktails.
Wild Turkey Rye is the recipient of a Silver Medal at the 2007 San Francisco World Spirits Competition
Price: Low $20’s
Color: Light Amber just a little more golden them most lagers are.
Nose: Has a great sweet scent of caramel with hints of spice and vanilla. There was a bit of alcohol that followed but not too over powering.
Palate: Similar to the nose. There was a tiny bite from the alcohol and spice. The taste of the rye, caramel, and vanilla are present the whole time. It was more on the dryer side of things.
Finish: lasting and warm, mildly spicy.
I really enjoyed this but would rather see it mixed into my cocktail then to seek it out neat. I prefer something a little smoother from my liquor when selecting a spirit to drink neat. That being said, I think this would make a great addition to any well rounded liquor cabinet.
